Giulia Wyss (b. 1992, Switzerland) is a realist-figurative painter whose work centers on the human gaze as a space of presence and connection. Working independently since 2020, she builds on a strong technical foundation developed during her studies at the Art School in St. Gallen.
Her practice explores the distinction between looking and truly seeing. Through concentrated compositions and a focus on the eyes, Wyss investigates how painting can become an act of recognition rather than mere representation. The portraits do not emphasize cultural context; instead, they seek a shared, elemental dimension of human existence beyond categorization.
Expanding beyond the traditional rectangular canvas, Wyss frequently paints on custom-cut wooden panels in recurring organic forms. These shaped supports introduce a sculptural presence into the space, functioning almost like apertures or thresholds. The viewer is positioned at the edge of an intimate encounter — not simply observing an image, but entering a moment of quiet exchange.
Through realism, materiality, and spatial form, Wyss approaches painting as a relational practice — an invitation to slow perception and experience the depth of human presence.
